How to Hang Kitchen Pendants

As a general guide, hang pendants around 70–80cm above the island bench, and space multiple pendants 50–80cm apart. For ceilings higher than standard, add roughly 8cm of drop for every extra 30cm of ceiling height. Larger shades can generally hang a little higher and smaller shades lower. It depends on the length of your island and the size of the pendant. Two pendants often suit smaller islands, while three work well for longer benches. For a streamlined look, a single linear pendant or multi-light pendant can cover the full length.

How high should kitchen pendants hang above the benchtop?

Around 70–80cm between the benchtop and the bottom of the pendant is a good starting point. This is subjective and depends on your ceiling height, the size of the shade and the height of the people using the kitchen. A simple tip: have someone safely hold the pendant above the bench while you check the height from the floor. Your electrician can confirm the final position on installation.

How far apart should kitchen pendants be?

As a rule of thumb, space multiple pendants 50–80cm apart. This is flexible — you can group pendants closer together as a cluster for a statement look, or space them further apart on longer benches.

What shade material is best for a kitchen?

Glass, steel, metal and enamel shades are easy to wipe clean, which makes them a practical choice near cooking areas. Ceramic adds texture and a handmade feel, while rattan brings warmth to coastal and Japandi kitchens — it's best placed away from the cooktop.
