The Origins of Linear Lighting
The original designs that led to linear lighting being created can’t be traced to any one individual; however, they can be linked to the design of the fluorescent lamp. These early linear style fluorescent tubes where ideally suited to factories and offices that needed continual illumination. Later in the 1950’s as we saw design come to the fore, designers like Poul Hennigsen and Gino Sarfetti began encasing fluorescent tubes in stylish, modern, and sleek housings which effectively created the first linear styled lights. So the humble fluorescent tube became a form of architectural decorative style.

How Many Linear Lights Should You Use?
When thinking about this question, you should consider in your mind’s eye when planning your space the size of the room, ceiling height, room usage and the brightness level you are looking to achieve. The goal is to be balanced in our design and not have any dark spots.
- When looking to select the right size linear pendant for your space, if placing over a table. Aim for a light that’s about two thirds the length of your table to give you the best coverage and proportionality for the space.
- Another consideration is the height placement above your table’s kitchen islands or work benches. To ensure and even light distribution aim to hang your lighting 70-80cm above your benchtop.
