At Baker of Things, it’s all about simple things, done well, with love.
Amazing things happen when you combine locally roasted coffee and a head chef whose extensive career includes Beatrix Bakes, a former cult icon of the Melbourne cake scene.
Initially conceived as a wholesale venture, Baker of Things took on a life of its own when owners John and Stephanie Vroom found a place that called to be a retail bakery rather than a wholesale space. John and Stephanie, who own the successful Maker coffee brand and their five Melbourne coffee shops, saw potential in the Richmond space, inspired by the airy feel and a glass-walled section that would become Baker’s kitchen. The offering is a delicious, far-from-standard selection of baguettes, loaves and other savoury bakes, baguette sandwiches for the lunch rush, and a mouth-watering cake cabinet filled with ‘gram-worthy cakes, biscuits, tarts and buns. And coffee, of course.
The fit-out places the food at the centre of attention. From the glass-walled kitchen where you can watch Zoe Pearce and her team work, to the wide, light-timbered counter where you can stare longingly at the cake cabinet while the staff make your coffee and bag up your loaf of sourdough – the sights, smells and sounds are a celebration of simple things, done well. The modern industrial look is kept bright and simple with white tiling and concrete floors, lit with a double row of black industrial pendants from Fat Shack Vintage.
